The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is the 3rd bridge built on the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, Turkey. The hybrid bridge deck supports two lanes of railroad tracks encased by an 8-lane highway (4 on each side). It is the widest and longest span cable-stayed bridge in the world. It also holds the world records for the longest railway bridge and the suspension bridge with the highest pylons (322 m). As such, this exceptional structure requires very rigorous monitoring, which is carried out by Diades through a complete monitoring cycle spread over several years.

Mission of Diades

Our mission is an intellectual service mission carried out with the framework of the multi-year follow-up of the bridge. It consists in carrying out the initial inspection of the sensitive elements, the annual inspections and the general inspections of the structure. Inspections cover the entire structure, in particular the 68 hangers, the deck bracing, the specific support devices installed in the seismic zone and all the particular devices fitted to this type of hybrid structure. Monthly monitoring of the instrumentation with reporting and behavioural analysis of the structure is also carried out thanks to the data transmitted by the multiple sensors fitted to the structure.

In order to better serve the School of the Nativity, which is situated at the end of a cul-de-sac immediately next to the Arc river, the townhall wished to build a footbridge to enable the Arc to be crossed. The footbridge is extended by an aerial path of over 100 metres which links the school to the schooling car park on the other riverbank. The footbridge is located in the area known as “domaine de la Grassie” and was built at the same time as the school car parking and the seven residential buildings.

The footbridge was constructed at the same time and in the same area as the construction of seven residential buildings and a car park. These interactions made the management of the activities more complex.

  • 40 metre footbridge extended by a 100-metre aerial path

 Mission of Diades

Diades was tasked with carrying out the complete project management for the building of the footbridge. The task consisted of the following phases, some of which were carried out, at the design stage, in collaboration with Setec Tpi:

  • Preliminary studies with architectural design,
  • Pre-project studies,
  • Project studies,
  • Preparing tender documents,
  • Assistance in awarding contracts,
  • Project conformity assessment and approval of plans,
  • Supervision of works,
  • OPC,
  • Approval of works following completion.

 The works were carried out in 12 months.

A bowstring type structure was selected following research into the bridge’s integration within the landscape and how best to highlight it.

Located on the by-pass motorway of Rabat in Morocco, the crossing structure of the Bouregreg’s wadi (a few hun-dred meters from the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah dam) with a length of 954.40 m is composed of a cable-stayed viaduct and a post tension prestressed beams bridge.

The architectural design, especially of its 2 pylons, combines modernity and influences of traditional Moroccan culture.

Features

The inspection of the deck of the cable-stayed viaduct required an importation from France of a negative boomlift for the passage between the stays, and our special drone.

Mission of Diades

Our mission was to conduct the Initial Detailed Inspection of the Mohammed VI Viaduct, under the terms of the ITSEOA 2010 February 16, 2011.
Given the architectural characteristics of this structure, the access means used had to be adapted accordingly.
In particular, the detailed inspection of the pylons was carried out using the Diadès Drone whereas the interior and the inferior facing parts of the pylons were controlled by rope access technician under the management and responsibility of Diadès.
The inspection of the intrados was carried out with the aid of a negative boomlift with sufficient articulations to pass through the cable-stays.
As part of this IDI, a control of the tension and the damper of the cable-stays by the vibrating method was conducted.

These missions concern detailed studies of the service levels of structures, by analysing the real residual bearing capacities of the structures beyond the regulatory verifications, and by accompanying these measurements with post-critical calculations based on targeted investigations. These measurements are often accompanied by adapted monitoring programs and allow to determine the predictive behaviour of structures.

These missions can be used to alleviate or postpone major maintenance and repair/reinforcement programs due to budget or operational constraints, for example.

We also carry out “forensic engineering” missions in order, for example, to trace the precise kinematics of the ruin of a structure, within the framework of an expertise operation for example.

These missions can combine maintenance, programming, monitoring and follow-up of the behaviour of materials and structures. They can be used in particular by concession grantors to guarantee the condition and validity of the concession contract for an infrastructure, or by concessionaires to obtain a road, motorway or rail concession, within the framework of a call for tenders for concessions.

These missions consist in carrying out, with or without specific access means, a visual expertise of the apparent state of a structure. These missions are carried out by our experienced inspectors and technicians who are specially trained in the field of civil engineering pathology. Whether in initial training, continuing learning or in a specific support program, our skilled personnel use these defects finding to develop the “foundation” of diagnosis engineering. The findings and interpretations of the “existing” must therefore be precise, relevant, and reliable throughout the projects that we carry out after these missions.

These missions also generally make it possible to refine the program of specific investigations after a first report of the external state of the structure.
